چکیده

Late-instar larvae, pupae, and adults of Tribolium castaneum (Herbst), the red flour beetle, or Tribolium confusum (DuVal), the confused flour beetle, were exposed for variable durations at 36–54 1C. Beetles were placed in laboratory ovens set at a baseline of 27 1C, the temperature was increased by 0.1 1C per minute until the target temperature was achieved, and beetles were then held for specified exposure durations. There was no mortality after initial exposure or after a 1-week holding period of any life stage of T. castaneum or T. confusum exposed for 32 h to 36, 39, or 42 1C. At 45 1C, there was no initial mortality of either species exposed for different time intervals except for those exposed for 28 h. However, there was a significant increase in mortality after the 1-week holding period of those beetles exposed initially for at least 16 h to 45 1C. There was a sharp increase in mortality after the initial exposures of 4 h at 48 1C; mortality of T. confusum larvae was 90.075.7% but was only 10.0710.0% for larvae of T. castaneum, and no pupae of either species were dead. All life stages of both species were killed after the initial exposure of 12 h, and 1-week mortality of beetles exposed for 4 and 8 h was generally greater than initial mortality. Insecticidal efficacy of diatomaceous earth against Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae)

Laboratory bioassays were carried out to evaluate the insecticidal efficacy of SilicoSec? against 7 - 14 day old adults, old and young larvae of Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) with the mean ? SE (n = 30) weight of 3.4 ? 0.1 and 0.6 ? 0.1 mg, respectively at 27?C and 55 ? 5% RH. Wheat treated with four dose rates of SilicoSec? and untreated wheat served as a control with three replications. Adult?...

Influence of acclimation to sublethal temperature on heat tolerance of Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) exposed to 50°C

Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) is a serious pest of stored agricultural products and one of the most common insects found in grain storage and food processing facilities. Heat treatment has been revisited to control stored-product insects as a potential alternative to methyl bromide for disinfesting mills and food-processing facilities. The influence of acclimation of ...

Residual Activity of Methoprene and Novaluron as Surface Treatments to Manage the Flour Beetles, Tribolium castaneum and Tribolium confusum

The juvenile hormone analog methoprene, and the chitin synthesis inhibitor novaluron, were evaluated by exposing late-stage larvae of Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) or Tribolium confusum (Jacqueline DuVal) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) to it. The larvae were exposed to it in food material, on concrete, on plywood, and on floor tile. Larvae of T. castaneum were more susceptible than T. confusum larv...

Time-mortality relationships for Tribolium castaneum (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) life stages exposed to elevated temperatures.

The use of elevated temperatures (> or = 40-60 degrees C) or heat treatments for managing insects in food-processing facilities is a viable alternative to space fumigation with methyl bromide. Quantitative data are lacking on the responses of life stages of the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst), an important pest of food-processing facilities worldwide, to elevated temperatures use...

Efficacy of a volatile formulation of hydroprene (Pointsourcet) to control Tribolium castaneum and Tribolium confusum (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae)

Threeand 4-week-old Tribolium castaneum (Herbst), the red flour beetle, and Tribolium confusum (du Val), the confused flour beetle, were exposed at five different temperature–relative humidity (r.h.) combinations to a volatile formulation of the insect growth regulator (IGR) hydroprene (called Pointsourcet). Typical effects associated with IGR exposure, such as arrested larval growth, morpholog...
